The Hoysala Empire, a powerful South Indian dynasty that ruled most of what is now Karnataka between the 11th and 14th centuries, derives its name from the legendary words “Hoy-Sala,” meaning “Strike, Sala!” Have you ever wondered about the story behind these words?

According to folklore, the origins of the name ‘Hoysala’ lie in the story of a brave young man named Sala. One day, while accompanying his Jain guru, Sudatta Muni, they were confronted by a ferocious tiger. Faced with imminent danger, the guru called out to Sala, urging him to strike the beast. Without hesitation, the courageous Sala slayed it down with a blow. This act of valor not only saved his guru’s life but also earned Sala immense admiration.

Overjoyed by Sala’s bravery, Sudatta Muni is said to have encouraged him to establish his own kingdom, and thus, the Hoysala Empire was born. This legendary tale became an essential part of the Hoysala identity with the tiger-slaying hero symbolizing strength, courage, and divine favor.

This tale of Sala’s brave act has been immortalized in the magnificent temples of Belur and Halebidu, which served as the capitals of the dynasty. It also became a prominent symbol, serving as the royal emblem of the Hoysala Empire.
