The name Ganesha literally means “Lord of the Ganas,” the attendants of Lord Shiva. Ganesha is also known as Vigneshwara, “the one who removes all obstacles.” It is strongly believed the blessings of Ganesha can make any human endeavor successful, which is why he is worshipped first before embarking on any new venture.
Ganesh Chaturthi, also called Vinayaka Chavithi, marks the birth of Lord Ganesha. It falls on the fourth day of the month of Bhadrapada. The festival begins with the making/arrival of an idol of Ganesha in homes and public pandals. After a ten-day worship, the idols are immersed in water. This marks the end of Ganesha’s visit to earth and his return to Mount Kailasa to join his parents, Shiva and Parvati.
As the nation celebrates this festival, let’s pause for a moment to reflect on the choices we make while choosing an idol. Though plaster of Paris (PoP) idols painted with chemical colors may be visually striking, they pose serious threats to water bodies, wildlife, and the ecosystem. Instead, opting for a clay idol is the best way to celebrate the festival while honoring the tradition and safeguarding the environment.

Here are three reasons to choose a clay idol for Ganesh Chaturthi:
- Restores the fertile soil: Ganesh Chaturthi follows the monsoon, a season that erodes fertile soil from lake beds and riverbanks. Immersing clay idols made from natural mud helps restore soil in these water bodies.
- Ensures a pollution-free festival: PoP idols do not dissolve easily. Moreover, they release toxic chemicals, contaminating water and harming aquatic life. In contrast, clay idols break down naturally, ensuring that water remains safe for animals, plants and human use.
- Provides a healing touch: Many natural offerings—including turmeric and bilva leaves, which are known for their medicinal properties—are widely used during the pooja. When immersed with clay idols, they help purify the water and create a healthier environment.
Choosing a clay idol is the best way to harmonize our celebrations with nature. This Ganesh Chaturthi, let’s honor tradition and leave a legacy of sustainability.
