Located in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu, Sivakasi is a town steeped in legend and industrious spirit. There’s a fascinating story behind the origin of the name of this place.
Legend has it the Pandya king Arikesari Parakrama wished to build a temple to Lord Shiva and traveled to Kashi to bring back a Siva lingam. On his return journey, when the cart carrying the lingam refused to move further, he interpreted this as a divine sign and installed the lingam at that very spot, which is now known as the Kasi Viswanathar Temple. And the place where the lingam was installed came to be known as Sivakasi.
In addition to its historical significance, Sivakasi is known for its industrious nature. Described as ““Kutty Japan” or “Little Japan” by Jawaharlal Nehru, the town lives up to its name because of the hardworking nature of its people employed. Sivakasi is major hub for industries such as printing, safety matches, and fireworks. The town’s thriving economy is powered by its skilled workforce and efficient production processes, making it a crucial center for these sectors in the country.
